The types of support we can offer

We aim to develop individualised support, promote independence and offer real choices. This could be anything from support with personal care needs, managing finances, shopping, cooking and running a home, to looking at what’s on in the local community and getting involved. It is important for us that individuals can explore what it means to have support and how it can work for them. We offer one to one support, and when it’s right for the individual, promote shared support, whether this is for activities, supporting individuals with shared interests, or when living together.

It can be confusing when talking about support that may be provided, so here are some terms that are commonly used, with a brief explanation about them :

Supported Living – this kind of support is for people who live with their family or carers as well as those who already live in their own homes. It’s about looking at what it means to live independently which could be anything from support with managing finances, shopping, cooking, and running a home, to looking at what’s on in the local community and getting involved. It’s flexible support that can be for a couple of hours a week or for support every day.

Domiciliary Care – this is support where physical assistance is given to a person within their own home situation in connection with eating or drinking, toileting, washing or bathing. It can also mean when someone is prompted or supervised to do any of the types of personal care listed above, or supported to take medication.

Residential Care – this usually means that you live with a number of people in a registered care home which is staffed 24 hours a day. Residential homes are registered with the Care Quality Commission, and the people living in the home are residents not tenants.
