Devon Baker

I have worked at Welmede for 8 years as a full-time administrator and for much of that time I have also worked as a part-time support worker.

I work closely with Operational Managers at all levels within the organisation, and I liaise with the Care Quality Commission regarding registration and regulation. I'm also involved in our Referrals process in which capacity I get to speak with a variety of people about Welmede’s services. My main role has expanded considerably during my time at Welmede and I have been given many opportunities to take on additional responsibilities and to develop my role to play an important part in delivering quality care and support to our services.

Much of my day to day work concerns the management of incidents and risks to ensure that all of our service users and staff are kept safe and secure, and the assurance of quality in the care and support that we provide. In my administrative role I regularly speak to service users (as well as their families and representatives) in person and on the telephone. I take pride in making every effort to meet their needs, and in establishing a rapport with every individual. I particularly value the facilitation role that I have in Welmede’s service user involvement programme, including regular Tenants Meetings and New Directions Meetings (our Service User Forum).

As a support worker I have seen individuals that I work with make fantastic progress towards increasing independence, developing a wide range of skills and growing their confidence. I am delighted to think that I have played a part in supporting service users towards these goals.

While circumstances have led me to withdraw from my part-time support worker role, I have stayed in contact with one particular service user with whom I have developed a bond and we continue to enjoy some of his favourite activities together. I was very proud to accompany him to receive an award at the prestigious Surrey Care Association awards ceremony at which we were both part of a team representing Welmede and the wonderful work that our staff do.
